Transcript of Interview

Kay Quinn: …or it could be a wedding toast, or a class assignment in high school or college. Most of us get anxious when we’re asked to talk to an audience, and Art Holliday here has a story about the fear of speaking in public. 75 percent of us are afraid to talk in public. You and I aren’t — aren’t among those people.

Art Holliday: The number two phobia is fear of death; but the number one phobia is fear of speaking in public, okay.

Kay Quinn: Wow. Can you imagine?

Art Holliday: It’s called glossophobia. And when it comes to talking the talk, many people would rather get a root canal or an IRS audit than make a speech.

It’s time to talk about talking.

Fred Miller: Yikes. Me, speak in front of a group? Oh, my gosh.

Art Holliday: Welcome to Cave Springs Toastmasters where an author and a teenage film maker face their fear.

Male1: Very afraid. I have a big fear in public speaking.

Female1: You know, I did have a little bit of a fear in public speaking. But, like, Fred said today, practice, practice, practice.

Art Holliday: Fred Miller is an author who coaches people how to speak in public.

Fred Miller: If your reaction to a speaking opportunity is more Yikes than Yes, you’re not alone. Lots of people have a fear of public speaking.

Art Holliday: Miller says he is used to calming nervous narrators.

Fred Miller: I’ve coached lawyers, and doctors, and CEOs; coached a bride — father of the bride to be. I think he started having panic attacks the day his daughter got engaged, thinking about giving that toast to the bride.

Art Holliday: Even presidential candidates can experience tongue turmoil.

Governor Perry: I would do away with the education, the commerce, and let’s see. I can’t. The third one, I can’t. I’m sorry. Oops.

Art Holliday: Fred Miller’s goal is oops for your confidence when you work the crowd.

Fred Miller: Kind of feel like your naked all alone, vulnerable? That’s just it. You’ve got to get used to it.

Female2: The first speech, oh my gosh, my legs were shaking; and now I ‘m on speech seven and-

Male4: I’m not very good at public speaking and, plus, I’m very shy. I just realized well, this is the best opportunity to come here and learn.

Male5: Thank you Mayor, and fellow Reglinians.

Art Holliday: Fred Miller says you can go from knee-knocking nervousness to a knock-your-socks-off presentation. All you have to do is–

Fred Miller: Speak, speak, speak. If you want to be a swimmer, swim. If you want to be a baker, bake. The learning is in the doing. So, if you want to be a speaker, just get up and speak.

Art Holliday: Just make sure you hold onto your script.

Now, Fred Miller’s book is “No Sweat Public Speaking!”

Among his tips:

People remember the first and last thing you tell them, so have a strong opening and a strong close to your speech.

Have confident body language. Remember that the audience is on your side and they want you to succeed.

And Miller is a big fan of Toastmasters International, which helps improve public speaking and leadership skills. There are 77 Toastmaster organizations in Missouri and Illinois within 25 miles of downtown St. Louis. So, a lot of people are aware of their fears and they’re trying to do something about it.

Kay Quinn: Yeah, you’ve go to remember we’re all just human, right. So, you’re going to make mistakes from time to time, or slip up, and I love the Don Knotts’ thing. Oh, that is so funny. That’s classic. It’s priceless. Thank you so much, Art.

Art Holliday: Thank you.

Speakers: It’s not about you!

It’s all about your Audience!

Successful Companies are Customer Centered.

They focus on the Customer; the needs and challenges their customers have.

They focus on meeting those needs and solving those challenges.

That means:

The Medical Community is Patient Centered.

The Educational System is Student Centered.

The Hospitality Industry is Guest Centered.

To be successful in the Public Speaking / Presentation World we need to be
Audience Centered!

The audience didn’t come to see and hear you. They did come to learn! They came to learn about the subject you are speaking on.

If you switch your focus from the audience to you, you’re in trouble -
You’re in Big Trouble!

You start second guessing yourself and wondering things like:

Am I speaking too quickly?

Maybe I’m talking too slowly.

Rats! I think I left out something important in the first section of my talk!

How do I look? (I think I need to lose some weight and shine my shoes next time.)

Do not underestimate this concept of being Audience Centered. It is HUGE!

Understand it – Believe it – Practice it!

Being Audience Centered will increase the quality of your presentation and lessen your fear of public speaking.

Not being Audience Centered is one of the main reasons speakers deliver their presentations poorly. They are so focused on themselves and their own performance that they make mistakes. They forget why the audience came and concentrate, instead, on their own performance.

How the speaker delivers is certainly important. I’ve stated often that Delivery trumps Content. However, the speaker’s knowledge and passion for the subject will go a long way to trumping technique.

If you have all three: Knowledge – Passion – Technique
You will own the audience! When you own the audience, they will GET IT! and
GETTING IT is the goal of all communication.

Survey after survey lists it at top of the ‘Fear List’ most people have. Some say they would rather die than stand in front of an audience and deliver a speech. Unfortunately, it holds many people back from reaching their true potential.

It is a fear worth confronting and overcoming.

You might be the world’s leading authority on a subject, but if you can’t present that expertise to others in a manner that educates, entertains, and explains it well, you won’t achieve the goals that should be yours!

The research shows: “Speaking Opportunities are Business, Career and Leadership Opportunities.”

I have coached individuals from all occupations and educational backgrounds. They’ve ranged in age from fourth grade student to seniors.

Their occupations are varied. They include:

CEO

Author

Lawyer

Entrepreneur

Father of the bride

Mid-level manager

Commercial airline pilot

Internet marketing expert

Beauty Pageant Contestant

and many others from a variety of occupations.

I have found no common denominator for this fear. Since it affects, at one time or another, up to 75% of the population, I don’t believe there is one.

Why do we have this fear?

1. Out of our Comfort Zone
First of all, for most people, speaking in front of a group takes us out of our comfort zone. Most of our talking is one-on-one; and much of that is on a telephone! It’s easy to understand why having fifty to hundred or more eyeballs looking at us would give an uneasy feeling.

Standing in front of an audience, and being “in the spotlight” is not, for most, an everyday event. Add to this the fact that you are the only one talking and, for the most part, have to rely on reading nonverbal communication for the effectiveness of your presentation.

2. The What Ifs?
What if:

I mess up?

they don’t like me?

I’m not perfect?

they start laughing at me?

the last speaker was way better than I am?

stop paying attention to my presentation?

they ask me a question I don’t know the answer to?

someone knows more about the subject than I know?

and one of the biggest what ifs

What if I’ve got nothing to tell them that they don’t already know?

Nonsense!

A good friend once said, “Often, you’re so close to your own knowledge base that
you don’t know what you know!”

Your every day could be someone else’s payday!

Your every day could be someone else’s Ah Hah moment!

You definitely have something to say!

Talk about:

your passion.

your job.

your greatest success.

your biggest failure.

your travel experience.

your family.

your hobby.

your dreams!

3. The Fear of Failure!
Failure gets a bad rap! Instead of avoiding things we might fail at, we should embrace those opportunities.

Think about yourself. Have you learned more from what you’ve done correctly or from things you’ve ‘failed’ at? I assume, like me, it’s the things you didn’t do so well. First you’re upset. When you cool off you analyze what went wrong and how to fix it. When something goes correctly, you probably don’t give it a second thought, and perhaps, think you’re “just good!”

Most very successful people say if they had to do it all over, again, they would:

Fail early.

Fail often.

Sometimes, fail BIG!

If you have a Fear of Public Speaking, it is normal.
You are not alone. 75% of the population has this fear. There’s even a word for it – glossophobia. Glosso is from the Greek meaning tongue, and phobus meaning fear.

The important thing to remember is that it is a Word, not a disease. It can be controlled! For strategies to lessen this fear read my other posts and/or buy the book,

It’s a Word, not a disease. It can be controlled.

You are not alone. There is comfort in numbers. 75% of the population have this fear.

Don’t tell the audience! Do that, and it could become a self-fulfilling prophecy. They want you to be successful and are glad you are delivering the presentation and not them.

Know your stuff! There is a “confidence in your competence” that lowers anxiety. Always study the latest on your topic and you’ll have that confidence.

Arrive Early and Meet & Greet! It is amazing how much easier it is to speak to people you’ve already met. To make the Meet & Greet easier, insist on people wearing Name Tags. Name Tags reach out and pull people in. They close the gap between people and make the Meet & Greet exercise faster and easier. Audience members also appreciate having these to Meet & Greet each other!

Give the audience a Road Map of what you’ll be presenting. Tell them the order of your presentation and when and if you’ll be handling questions. (The best location is before your closing.) People like to know what to expect. Knowing they know the agenda will lessen your anxiety and eliminate hands being raised in the middle of your talk.

Constantly Take the Temperature of the audience. Look for eye contact, positive facial expressions, and body language indicating your message is being understood. Knowing the recipients are GETTING IT! is positive feedback and lessens the Fear of Public Speaking.

Practice! – Practice – Practice! This is the BIG TIP! Nothing replaces practicing. The best of the best practice one hour for each minute of presentation. (One hour per minute is not a misprint!)

Have Notes or a Mind Map at hand. There is nothing wrong with having notes! You know your stuff and don’t want to leave anything out of your presentation. Notes refresh your memory. (A Mind Map is a non-linear, visual, brainstorming tool. It is what I use to develop, practice, and deliver presentations.)

Be Prepared for Anything and Everything! “Stuff Happens”, and knowing you have backups and all contingencies lined up, in case “the wheels come off,” will ease your anxiety. (I know one person who always worries about the projector bulb burning out in the middle of his presentation and not having a spare handy.)

This stuff works!

There's no easy way to get rid of the Fear of Public Speaking and become a Great Presenter.

Don't despair! Public Speaking/Delivering Presentations is a skill that can be learned.

Think about it: You learned how to ride a bike, drive a car, use a computer. and many other things. You weren't born knowing how to do any of those activities, correct?

Public Speaking is learned the same way those skills were learned. You study them, then apply what you learned.

Sorry, It Doesn’t Exist!

I wish it did. Maybe it, and the one that gets rid of the Fear of Public Speaking, are in clinical trials somewhere. I haven’t found either.

If you have them, or know where they can be purchased, please let me know!

Until then, there’s no easy way to get rid of the Fear of Public Speaking and become a Great Presenter.

Don’t Despair!

Public Speaking is a skill that can be learned.

Think about it: You learned how to ride a bike, drive a car, use a computer. and many other things. You weren’t born knowing how to do any of those activities, correct?

Public Speaking is learned the same way those skills were mastered. You study, then apply what you discovered.

You’ll make mistakes – lots of them – Good! We learn by making mistakes and failing. But don’t think about it is as failing. Think of the process as Experimenting! When we do experiments we don’t expect to find the correct “formula” immediately, do we? It usually takes lots of experiments to find what works. Thomas Edison, so the story goes, experimented over 10,000 times (I’ve seen figures different than this) to find what worked for building the first light bulb. He never looked upon any of his work as failure, but each as an experiment that got him closer to his goal.

Your journey to becoming a great presenter should be seen in the same vein. You experiment and experiment and experiment until you find the “formula” that works! Then you continually refine it. Becoming a great presenter is a process – not an event.

The real learning is in the doing! You can do all the intellectualizing you want about becoming a great presenter: Watch videos, read books and articles, listen to audios of presenters and go see professionals in action. That stuff is all good, but until you SPEAK! nothing really moves forward and you won’t get better without SPEAKING!

Before you SPEAK to an audience, you must Practice: Practice, Practice, Practice, and Practice some more!

Do athletes just show up for the big game? Do musicians suddenly appear at concerts? NO!
Both groups have practiced and practiced before their big event. There is no reason to think you can just “wing” a speech and do it well.

Besides the practicing that must be done, there must also be considerable and continuing study. You can always learn something new and always improve your presentations. This is what you should be doing. This is what this Post and Blog is dedicated to.

This stuff works!

How to Develop, Practice and Deliver a ‘Knock-Your-Socks-Off!’ presentation with -
No Sweat:

John: What is the one piece of advice that you could give people.

Fred: To become speakers?

John: Yes, sir.

Fred: Okay. Write this down: speak, speak, speak.

John: Speak?

Fred: Speak — you can do all the intellectual analyzing you want about it, but the learning is in the doing. So you can read about it, you can watch videos of other speaks — you’ve got to speak.

John: You’re never nervous.

Fred: Oh, plenty nervous!

John: Oh, you’re nervous when you get up there?

Fred: Yeah, but you know what, face the fear and do it anyway. What’s the worst that can happen?

John: Well, the worst that could happen is that people would start laughing at you. Isn’t that what’s in the back of everybody’s head?

Fred: Yeah, yeah — that they’re going to laugh at you, that you’ve got nothing to say. But you know what? It’s a drop in the ocean of your life. Big deal.

John: Yeah, it really is. I mean, what do you have to lose? Somebody once told me that, “If you get up there and you look out over the vast audience and visualize everybody in their underwear, suddenly you’re not intimidated.”

Fred: Oh my gosh!

John: Oh, this is — oh, that is scary here at Fox too.

Fred: Hey, let’s get some better looking people!

John: Put some clothes on, young lady. All right, I wrote down some — best advice. Okay, you equate learning to give a good speed with an athlete, like Michael Jordan.

Fred: Yeah. You know, somehow people think that they can just get up and wing it with a speech. So I always ask the athletes, “Do you ever practice or do you just show up for the game?” Musicians — do they practice or do they just show up for the concert? You gotta practice.

John: Well, how do you practice?

Fred: Oh, practice — this is good practice for me.

John: Just like what we’re doing right now in front of the camera.

Fred: Yeah, yeah — just do it. You know, do it into the mirror, record yourself, do it in front of friends and family.

John: Yeah. Another person told me one time: If you’re getting up in front of an audience, one of the first things you do is just pause, don’t start right into it.

Fred: Oh, you’re right.

John: You know, maybe reach for your glasses and put them on, your reading glasses — a little pause there.

Fred: Great advice, it gets everyone’s attention. First of all, they’re wondering maybe you lost it, but then you have their attention when you pause. And actually, pausing is one of the toughest things for speakers. We want to fill that air space, but when you pause, you get people’s attention, you give them a chance to think about what you’ve said.

John: What about the old cliché’ of starting out with a joke?

Fred: Well, it’s got to be relevant, it has to be relevant, because if they’re not — and it has to be funny, because of they’re not laughing, they’re laughing at you.

John: Then you’re the joke.

Fred: You’re the joke.

John: Oh, God, I hate that when that happens. All right, well where can people find out more material? You’ve got a website, I know, that people can go to.

Fred: Yeah. Nosweatpublicspeaking.com, it’s on Amazon, love to talk to people about this.

John: Sure. And there’s the book, $15.00. It’s called, No Sweat Public Speaking, and the first thing you can do right now is speak, speak, speak, speak — that’s it.

[End of Recorded Material]

Text Notes interfere with the emotional connection you want to make with your audience. They are black text on a white background, like you’re reading now – Yuk!

Certainly you can read text with emotion, but the emotional connection is more immediately recognized when looking at high quality, easily understood, pictures and graphics. I place them on a Mind Map.

Mind Mapping is a non-linear, visual, brain storming tool. I use it to develop, practice and deliver presentations. A picture literally is worth 1,000 words, and looking at each image in my Mind Map, I immediately know what point to make.

Each of those images means something specific to me. I don’t have to read any text. It’s far easier to look at the image and “tell the story” the image reminds me of.

CLICK to enlarge the Mind Map graphic for this Post.
The title of the presentation is: Nuggets to Neutralize the Fear of Public Speaking – Now! It’s not your presentation, but I’ll bet that looking at the Map and images briefly, you could deliver it! (Sure, I’ve got brief text under those graphics, but after studying the Mind Map a few times, you could delete them.)

“Read” the presentation by starting at 12:00 o’clock and going clockwise. Look at each image and see how it relates to the “words.”

“See” how much easier it is to look at an icon vs. black and white text. I “know my stuff,” just as you know yours, so I just need a reminder of each nugget.

I won’t go thru the entire presentation, but here are a few of those “Nuggets.”

First Image – An image of three people with expressions of fear on their faces.
You are not alone! 75% of the population suffers from glossophobia, the fear of public speaking. It is a word, not a disease, and it can be controlled!

Second Image – Butterflies
You really never want to get rid of the butterflies in your stomach. A little nervous energy is good. You want those butterflies to fly in formation!

Third Image – Open Mouth with a Zipper over it.
Never, Never, Never tell the audience you are nervous. They will be looking for it and it could become a self-fulling prophecy.

Fourth Image – Handshake
Arrive early at the event to Meet & Greet people who will be in the audience. You will be amazed at how much easier it is to present to people you’ve already met.

Fifth Image – A Name Tag on top of the Handshake
Name Tags make the Meet & Greet much easier. They close the gap between people by reaching out and pulling you in.

Look at the rest of the images and see if you can determine what the text would be!

A huge benefit of using a Mind Map rather than notes is that it can lessen the Fear of Public Speaking. It does this because the images remind you of what you know and are going to present. Trying to memorize a presentation or, when nervous and trying to “read” notes, is very hard to do well.

You know the benefits of delivering presentations.

Great speakers are perceived as Experts.

Being an Expert helps your career. Perception is reality, and we rather work with Experts – correct?

Experts are also able to charge more for their services.

It’s good for the ego!

It’s worth the effort to be perceived as an Expert.

There is no pill to take, movie to watch, or book to read that will instantly morph you into a dynamic presenter. The only way to become a great speaker is to Speak! This is true of all skills, isn’t it? If you want to be a great baker – Bake! If you want to be a great swimmer – Swim! Studying the subject will help, but there is no shortcut to becoming great at anything. The learning is in the doing!

In the doing, there are going to be some failures. The cake will fall, the swim meet will be lost and the speaker will stumble. That’s life, that’s how we learn. Get over it and get on with it.

What’s the very worse that could happen if you give a lousy speech?
You make a fool of yourself, maybe a BIG Fool of Yourself. So what? Who really cares? As long as your talk didn’t hurt someone, what’s the big deal with failing?

I’ve delivered plenty of poor presentations.

No, it’s not fun.

Yes, it is embarrassing.

Of course, I vowed to never try it, again.

Absolutely, I learned more from those terrible presentations than I ever learned from the ones where there was great applause.

When you give that terrible speech:

Pick yourself up.

Dust yourself off.

Figure our what went wrong.

Work on correcting it.

Develop, Practice and Deliver another Speech.

I Guarantee:
The Worse Speech You’ll Ever Give, Is Far Better than the Speech You Never Give!
