Verb Verbal Communication

Have you ever watched a Professional Mime? They speak no words, but communicate very well, don’t they!

If they were to use their voice, their NonVerbal Communication: eye contact, facial expressions, gestures, posture, and body movements, would outweigh their spoken words.

Our NonVerbal Communication carries more weight than the words we say and how we say them.

Example: The speaker on the podium says, “I’m very excited to be speaking to this group today.” At the same time, he is yawning, not giving eye contact to anyone in the audience, and continually looking at his watch. What’s the message he’s sending?

Everything in the Delivery of our presentation must be in sync, else the audience will believe what they “See.”

While we can consciously use our NonVerbal Communication Skills to emphasize parts of our presentation, it’s important to remember that we exhibit involuntary NonVerbal Communication, also. (If you saw Simon Cowell’s eyebrows rise when Susan Boyle started singing her first song, “I Dreamed a Dream,” on Britain Has Talent, you know what I mean. Here’s a Link.)

Facial expressions like: raised eyebrows, rolling eyes, smirks, yawns, snickers and other expressions are often exhibited before we are conscious of them happening. Yet the audience sees them and immediately an impression is made. If not in sync with the words they were hearing, and carries a different meaning, the audience will believe the involuntary NonVerbal Communication they see.

The same holds true of gestures and body language. If we’re talking about something we are ‘passionate about’, but not ‘showing’ that emotion with gestures, posture and body language, the ‘disconnect’ tells our audience the ‘passion’ may not be as real as we’re telling them!

If using slides in a presentation, it is critical to either insert Blank Slides or use the “B” Blank Button at points in your presentation. This will shift the audiences’ eyes to you, the presenter. They will the see your important NonVerbal Communication.

Use NonVerbal Communication to reinforce the words you speak and enhance your Presentation:

Make Eye Contact with individuals in the audience.

It demonstrates honesty, self-confidence, and sincerity.

Use Facial Expressions.

Smile, when appropriate.

A smile is universal. I call it a non-physical hug because when you give one, you usually get one right back!

Other Facial Expressions are also universal and ‘seen’ the same by people all over the globe. They include expressions for:

Fear, Anger, Surprise, Disgust, Happiness, and being Sad.

Gesture to emphasize specific points of your presentation.

Be certain they are in sync with your message.

Make those gestures larger for larger audiences so all see them.

Your Posture conveys self-confidence, honesty, and leadership.

Don’t slouch, lean, or fidget when standing.

Posture also applies when you are sitting, before and after you speak.

Consider yourself always on stage.

When you Move Your Body, walk deliberately.

Pick several ‘anchor’ points to always return to. (Kind of an X marks the spot!)

One of those anchors can be ‘stage center,’ directly in front of the audience.

If you’re using slides in your presentation, be sure you have BLANKED the screen with the ‘B’ Button on your computer or remote, or inserted a Blank Slide. If you don’t do this, you are the screen!

In summary, if everything in a presentation is not in sync,
What you say and How you say it – EVERY TIME!Audio

For instance, if I say, “I really am enjoying being here at your event,” but continually look at my watch and have an expression on my face that says “I’m bored and wish I were somewhere else,” what is the message I am sending?

The audience, if they’re paying attention to your physical presentation, will not believe the words you just spoke.

Some will remember the famous Kennedy-Nixon Debates in 1960. The younger, handsome Kennedy won by most who watched the debate on television. Nixon had a heavy beard and wore a five o’clock shadow. He also sweated quite a bit where Kennedy’s forehead remained dry. Those folks who only heard the debate on the radio, and had no picture of the contestants, unanimously gave the win to Nixon, whose verbal communication skills triumphed over Kennedy’s.

The combination of Content and Delivery must be in sync. If not, Delivery trumps Content. On the Delivery side of the equation, if the elements are not “on message,” Non-Verbal trumps Verbal.

It is important speakers be aware of this. For various reasons, they may unconsciously feel differently about a subject than the message they are delivering.
Example: A PR spokesperson defends an oil leak for his tanker client, but is personally outraged by the damage to the environment. If not making themselves aware of this difference, they may involuntarily tip their hand and let their personal feeling get out through an element of their Non-Verbal communication.

Non-Verbal Communication includes:

Eye Contact

Facial Expressions

Gestures

Posture

Body Movement

Also important is your appearance and the non-verbal message this conveys. Appearance includes personal grooming and the attire you wear. All must be in sync with the content of your message. If not, you’re giving the audience mixed messages, and they’ll accept the non-verbal.

Any one of these, when not in sync with the content and verbal delivery, will throw the audience off and they’ll “Believe what they See!”

NonVerbal Communication Trumps Verbal Communication

The guy on the right says, “I’m really excited to have the opportunity to speak to you today.”

Do you believe him?

I imagine your answer is, “No!”

A Presentation has two Components:

Content

Delivery

Experts agree: Delivery is far more important than Content. You can have the greatest Content in the world, but if it can’t be Delivered in a manner that Educates, Entertains, and Explains, the audience will never GET IT! (GETTING It is the goal of all communication.)

The Delivery Component has two Parts:

Verbal:

Pronunciation and enunciation

Projection

Inflection

Cadence

Pause

Nonverbal

Eye Contact

Facial Expressions

Gestures

Posture

Body Movement

Ideally, every component and part of your presentation should be in sync. If not, the Nonverbal Component, as in the above example, will trump the words and all Verbal Components. This is important, because being aware of the immense strength of your nonverbal communication, and how it can reinforce or completely negate your message, will help you be a better presenter. Using the Nonverbal Components of communication can significantly help your audience GET IT!

People learn by hearing, seeing, and doing. By hearing your words and seeing Nonverbal Communication that reinforces your content, they’ll GET IT! quicker.

Example: I say, “A good way to gather personal stories to use in the Body of your presentation to reinforce a point is to be, as they say in Yoga, ‘Always present and in the moment.’ Then, capture those stories in real time.” I can reinforce this idea my grabbing something imaginary and placing it into my brain by tapping my head. GET IT?

Take this concept of using Nonverbal Communication to reinforce the words you speak and make your next presentation – No Sweat!

With business as tough and competitive as it is - Not Getting It! is - Not Acceptable!

A ‘No Sweat’ Public Speaking! Presentation, followed by customized workshops can boost those skills dramatically.

The results are often:

Increased sales

Improved productivity

Better communications

More individuals taking leadership roles.

We can take the very specific goals your company has for presentations and develop a team that wil get the results you want.

From Introduction to Closing to PowerPoint Presentations that help the audience GET IT!, a workshop can be tailored for your goals!

We’ve heard expressions like; “I can read his face”, or, “The expression on her face told the whole story.”

Those expressions are correct! The ways our face expresses emotion are varied, but the interpretations are pretty much universal.

The first, and most important Facial expression is – a Smile!

A Smile definitely is universal. It makes people feel liked and gives the impression you care about them.

A Smile can instantly put people, including your audience, at ease.

It conveys warmth. It’s a powerful expression that communicates friendliness no matter what language people speak or where they come from.

It can also, almost instantly, make you feel better and ease any tension you might have. (Keep this in mind when the butterflies in your stomach start flying.)

I refer to a smile as a Non-Physical Hug. Here’s the analogy: One of the neat things about a hug: When you give one – you get one right back! The same results often come with smiling.

Smiling translates into happiness, and it’s contagious!

Of course, other expressions can be made with your face. These can involve more than just your mouth and eyes.

Take a few moments, please, and picture the following expressions in your mind’s eye.

Better yet, stand in front of a mirror and make your face express these emotions:

Yech!

Happy

Sad

Embarrassed

Surprised

Nervous

Tastes Good!

Tired

Devious

Sleepy

Sour

Goofy

Interesting, isn’t it, how much we can communicate without saying a word?

Other facial expressions, often involuntary, include:

Yawning – sleepy, bored

Pursing lips – to hold back emotion

Tearing up and crying – Emotion

Sweating – feeling uneasy

Blushing – embarrassed, ill at ease

Raising eyebrows – surprised, shocked

And . . . ‘with a wink and a nod’ we can easily convey a message to those we’re communicating with.
