How to Develop, Practice and Deliver a ‘Knock-Your-Socks-Off!’ presentation with -
No Sweat:

John: What is the one piece of advice that you could give people.

Fred: To become speakers?

John: Yes, sir.

Fred: Okay. Write this down: speak, speak, speak.

John: Speak?

Fred: Speak — you can do all the intellectual analyzing you want about it, but the learning is in the doing. So you can read about it, you can watch videos of other speaks — you’ve got to speak.

John: You’re never nervous.

Fred: Oh, plenty nervous!

John: Oh, you’re nervous when you get up there?

Fred: Yeah, but you know what, face the fear and do it anyway. What’s the worst that can happen?

John: Well, the worst that could happen is that people would start laughing at you. Isn’t that what’s in the back of everybody’s head?

Fred: Yeah, yeah — that they’re going to laugh at you, that you’ve got nothing to say. But you know what? It’s a drop in the ocean of your life. Big deal.

John: Yeah, it really is. I mean, what do you have to lose? Somebody once told me that, “If you get up there and you look out over the vast audience and visualize everybody in their underwear, suddenly you’re not intimidated.”

Fred: Oh my gosh!

John: Oh, this is — oh, that is scary here at Fox too.

Fred: Hey, let’s get some better looking people!

John: Put some clothes on, young lady. All right, I wrote down some — best advice. Okay, you equate learning to give a good speed with an athlete, like Michael Jordan.

Fred: Yeah. You know, somehow people think that they can just get up and wing it with a speech. So I always ask the athletes, “Do you ever practice or do you just show up for the game?” Musicians — do they practice or do they just show up for the concert? You gotta practice.

John: Well, how do you practice?

Fred: Oh, practice — this is good practice for me.

John: Just like what we’re doing right now in front of the camera.

Fred: Yeah, yeah — just do it. You know, do it into the mirror, record yourself, do it in front of friends and family.

John: Yeah. Another person told me one time: If you’re getting up in front of an audience, one of the first things you do is just pause, don’t start right into it.

Fred: Oh, you’re right.

John: You know, maybe reach for your glasses and put them on, your reading glasses — a little pause there.

Fred: Great advice, it gets everyone’s attention. First of all, they’re wondering maybe you lost it, but then you have their attention when you pause. And actually, pausing is one of the toughest things for speakers. We want to fill that air space, but when you pause, you get people’s attention, you give them a chance to think about what you’ve said.

John: What about the old cliché’ of starting out with a joke?

Fred: Well, it’s got to be relevant, it has to be relevant, because if they’re not — and it has to be funny, because of they’re not laughing, they’re laughing at you.

John: Then you’re the joke.

Fred: You’re the joke.

John: Oh, God, I hate that when that happens. All right, well where can people find out more material? You’ve got a website, I know, that people can go to.

Fred: Yeah. Nosweatpublicspeaking.com, it’s on Amazon, love to talk to people about this.

John: Sure. And there’s the book, $15.00. It’s called, No Sweat Public Speaking, and the first thing you can do right now is speak, speak, speak, speak — that’s it.

What you say and How you say it – EVERY TIME!Audio

For instance, if I say, “I really am enjoying being here at your event,” but continually look at my watch and have an expression on my face that says “I’m bored and wish I were somewhere else,” what is the message I am sending?

The audience, if they’re paying attention to your physical presentation, will not believe the words you just spoke.

Some will remember the famous Kennedy-Nixon Debates in 1960. The younger, handsome Kennedy won by most who watched the debate on television. Nixon had a heavy beard and wore a five o’clock shadow. He also sweated quite a bit where Kennedy’s forehead remained dry. Those folks who only heard the debate on the radio, and had no picture of the contestants, unanimously gave the win to Nixon, whose verbal communication skills triumphed over Kennedy’s.

The combination of Content and Delivery must be in sync. If not, Delivery trumps Content. On the Delivery side of the equation, if the elements are not “on message,” Non-Verbal trumps Verbal.

It is important speakers be aware of this. For various reasons, they may unconsciously feel differently about a subject than the message they are delivering.
Example: A PR spokesperson defends an oil leak for his tanker client, but is personally outraged by the damage to the environment. If not making themselves aware of this difference, they may involuntarily tip their hand and let their personal feeling get out through an element of their Non-Verbal communication.

Non-Verbal Communication includes:

Eye Contact

Facial Expressions

Gestures

Posture

Body Movement

Also important is your appearance and the non-verbal message this conveys. Appearance includes personal grooming and the attire you wear. All must be in sync with the content of your message. If not, you’re giving the audience mixed messages, and they’ll accept the non-verbal.

Any one of these, when not in sync with the content and verbal delivery, will throw the audience off and they’ll “Believe what they See!”

NonVerbal Communication Trumps Verbal Communication

The guy on the right says, “I’m really excited to have the opportunity to speak to you today.”

Do you believe him?

I imagine your answer is, “No!”

A Presentation has two Components:

Content

Delivery

Experts agree: Delivery is far more important than Content. You can have the greatest Content in the world, but if it can’t be Delivered in a manner that Educates, Entertains, and Explains, the audience will never GET IT! (GETTING It is the goal of all communication.)

The Delivery Component has two Parts:

Verbal:

Pronunciation and enunciation

Projection

Inflection

Cadence

Pause

Nonverbal

Eye Contact

Facial Expressions

Gestures

Posture

Body Movement

Ideally, every component and part of your presentation should be in sync. If not, the Nonverbal Component, as in the above example, will trump the words and all Verbal Components. This is important, because being aware of the immense strength of your nonverbal communication, and how it can reinforce or completely negate your message, will help you be a better presenter. Using the Nonverbal Components of communication can significantly help your audience GET IT!

People learn by hearing, seeing, and doing. By hearing your words and seeing Nonverbal Communication that reinforces your content, they’ll GET IT! quicker.

Example: I say, “A good way to gather personal stories to use in the Body of your presentation to reinforce a point is to be, as they say in Yoga, ‘Always present and in the moment.’ Then, capture those stories in real time.” I can reinforce this idea my grabbing something imaginary and placing it into my brain by tapping my head. GET IT?

Take this concept of using Nonverbal Communication to reinforce the words you speak and make your next presentation – No Sweat!

The figure on the right is not speaking, but their finger raised in front of their mouth is communicating - “Please be quiet!”

Gestures, like other forms of non-verbal communication, can stand on their own communicating a message.

They can also be combined with other forms of non-verbal communication, or be used in conjunction with the verbal part of speech delivery.

Gestures are not confined to the hands and movements we make with them. Gestures are defined as “motion of the limbs or body make to express or help express thought or to emphasize speech.”

Think about signing for babies and the hearing impaired, coaching signals in sports, and the communications runway personnel give pilots on the tarmac at airports. These are all examples of voluntary gestures with very specific communication objectives.

Gestures allow us to express a variety of thoughts and feelings.

Examples:

Throwing hands in the air – “I give up!”

Moving a hand forcefully up and down – Making a point

Snapping fingers – “I just remembered!”

Head in hands – Worry

Tapping on chest or head – “In my heart,” and “On my mind.”

Shrugging the shoulder – “I don’t know, ” or “Who cares?”

Cocking the head in a specific direction – “It’s over there,” or “Let’s go.”

Pounding a fist into the palm of your hand – “I’m mad!”

Holding you stomach – “I’m not feeling well.”

Rubbing the stomach – “Tastes good!”

Important:
Gestures are not universal! Different cultures interpret gestures in different manners. A seemingly innocuous gesture in this country could well be an obscene, even insulting gesture in another culture.

With the United States growing more and more culturally diverse, it’s important to be aware of this. Being insensitive to these different interpretations of gestures could negate an otherwise good presentation.

“Practice makes perfect.”

It’s not true.

Perfect practice makes perfect. However, and I don’t know where I read this,
“The road to perfection never ends.”

That statement aside, the mantra we’ve all heard from coaches, teachers, and parents, is:
“Practice, Practice Practice.”

When it comes to your speeches and presentations,

Practice in front of a mirror

Practice into a voice recorder – and listen to yourself

Practice in front of a video camera – and watch yourself

Practice in front of friends and family – and ask for feedback and take it to heart

Ask specifics from your audience, such as, ‘If there were two things I could improve – what are they?

Practice in your car when you have ‘windshield time’

Your speaking can always improve.

The best of the best make it look easy and natural because they Practice, Practice, Practice!
