Don Marsh, the host of “St. Louis on the Air”, had me as a guest on his show.  He is an excellent interviewer.

We discussed my book, “No Sweat Public Speaking!” There was also time for a few call-in questions as well as audience participation thru Twitter and Email.

Have a “Subtle Little Difference.”

Chapman’s Ice Cream was once a St. Louis tradition.  They were famous for their advertising campaign that stated there was a “subtle little difference” in Chapman’s Ice Cream that “made all the difference!”

This same philosophy can be applied to your presentations.  It’s the “subtle little differences” you put into your planning, then your talk, that will “make all the difference” in how the audience perceives you, your message and how well they GET IT! There are many areas where these differences can be applied.

Let’s look at some “subtle little differences” you can start using now! Read More→

“Quote Me on These!”

Posted by: | Comments (2)

Most of these are my own, or
modifications of ones I’ve read or heard at one time.  (At my age, there is a lot of information in my brain, and it’s sometimes hard to sort it all out. Bottom line, there is good stuff here I think you’ll find helpful!

The Goal of All Communication: verbal, written, or visual, is the same.
We want the recipient(s), as quickly as possible, to – GET IT!
They may not agree with evertything we say.
They may not agree with anything we say,
However, unless they GET IT!, we can’t have a meaningful discussion going forward.

To help the audience GET IT!, I need to:
• Educate them
They need to leave the room with more information knowing more about the subject I’m presenting than they knew coming in.
• Entertain them
We like to be entertained.  If I’m entertaining you, I have your attention.  If I have your attention, the odds are increased that you’ll GET IT!
• Explain my message.
I need to deliver a simple and clean presentation that is easy for them to understand.  My words, props and slides should be simple and easily understood by the audience. Read More→

Educate - Entertain – Explain

No Sweat Public Speaking! - green boardThe 3 Es of  Presenting will help ensure your audience understands your message; i.e. Gets It!

They may not agree with everything.  They may not agree with anything.

Unless they Get It!, there can’t be a meaningful discussion going forward.

Education is the first E.  Future posts will discuss the other two Es.

As the presenter, I want the audience to leave my presentation with more knowledge of the subject than when they arrived.

It is my responsibility to make that information valuable.   The title and description of the presentation brought them in.  What I present should exceed their expectations. Read More→

This does it for My audiences!  What do You do?

This Slide Show and Music will be playing when people enter the room I’ll be speaking in.

What effect do you think it has on them?  My thoughts are that it reminds many of them why they chose to attend.  It preps them for the information I’m going to deliver. Read More→

YOU Supply the Text!

If I project the slide on the right onto a screen, and at the same time say, “It’s time for you to leave!” – YouGet It!’

The slide, showing a door opening with an EXIT Sign above , is clean and simple.  My verbiage supplies the text - keeping the slide, and hence the message, clean and simple!

There is no need to have text, stating what I just said; flying, dropping or twisting in from one, two or more angles!  This only confuses the audience.  It actually lessens the understanding.

YOU are the star of your presentation - Not the slides! Read More→

"No Sweat Public Speaking!" brain

Since people learn in different ways, the more senses incorporated into your presentation, the better the meaning of your speech will be conveyed and information retained.

However, no prop, sound or scent will ever come close to what your “brain” can see, hear or smell.

I once heard the late Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert, the film critics, discussing several mediums of communication; radio, TV, and the big movie screen.

Their conclusion, with no option close, was that radio is the superior medium.

Because the “mind draws its own pictures” based on previous experiences and associations, it does the best job of “seeing”. The message is better received and personalized.

When I heard this, the old CBS Mystery Theater, immediately came to mind.

When we “hear” pictures painted, we go into the hard drives of our brain and pull out files that associate with what we are hearing, personalizing the message.

If we show a physical prop, that is the image the receiver records in their mind.

For some speeches, where a specific is being conveyed, this may be appropriate.

Where the prop is better personalized – leave the prop at home!
