Here’s a Virtual Video Meeting Tip. We’re all doing these virtual meetings these days.
The tip is: BACKGROUNDS Matter!
The First Thing people look at when you come on to one of these meetings is your face.
Second Thing is the BACKGROUND. Look at that mess! Got a new pan there. It looks like part of breakfast. Maybe some camping supplies. A magazine. All that is distracting.
Here’s a guy comes on. First thing you see is his face. Second thing, all these books. What’s he reading? Well, what’s that book about? Why is that book there? It’s all clutter. It’s distracting from the individual.
I look at this guy and it looks like he’s trying to promote his own stuff. Oh, I hate that. Isn’t that terrible!
Sometimes, I’ve come on to a meeting and somebody somebody’s sitting in front of a window. You can hardly see them. The sun is so bright coming through that window.
Others come in and they’re below a ceiling fan. It looks like maybe a helicopter is going to land on them!
And others look like there’s a lamp growing out of their head.
Here’s a Fact aboutPresentations.
We cannot multitask. We can’t do more than one thing at a time. If people are looking at your background, they’re not looking at you. That’s Important because: Non-Verbal Communication surpasses Verbal Communication. People believe what they see.
The best example I can give for this is cable news.
And they all do it. You ever see a little ticker tape coming across the bottom of the screen? If you’re reading that ticker tape, you have no idea what they’re talking about. To prove that, as soon as the commercial comes on – the ticker tape is gone. Advertisers would never pay for you not to see and hear their ad.
Think Zen-like: Clean and Simple.
Here’s a great example. Just the individual with a plain background.
Use these tips when attending your next virtual meeting and I guarantee it will be absolutely positively, NO SWEAT!
