  • Less is often MORE!

For Presentations, Sometimes WAY MORE! From Wicktionary, and spot on for this post: That which is of smaller quantity could be of higher quality. That which is less complicated is often better understood and more appreciated than what is more complicated. Brevity in communication is more effective than verbosity. In other words, Less is often MORE. For presentations, a lot MORE. One reason is because a primary Presentation Goal is for your audience to GET IT! They may not agree with everything. They may not agree with anything. Unless they GET IT!, meaningful discussions can’t follow. And, the audience wants to GET IT! –  Quickly! You are probably giving them a lot of information and they don’t want to take a lot of time to “figure out the meaning” of everything. To help them GET IT! LESSEN these things in your presentation. 1. Your Introduction Always write your own Introduction. It is not your bio, your responsibility to write, and an integral part of your presentation. Your Introduction should answer three questions: 1. WHY this subject? 2. WHY this speaker? 3. WHY now? Your audience is investing time, sometimes money, and opportunity cost (they could be doing something else) to watch and listen to you. Your Introduction should let the audience know you are the person to present this topic. Write your Introduction as succinctly as possible. Too often, what the emcee reads goes on and on to the point where the audience is telling themselves, “Let’s hear the speaker, already!” Long Introductions are the equivalent of too many commercials and previews of coming attractions before the featured attraction at a theatre. 2. Your Presentation Use simple language and simple words, deleting complex explanations and terms. Buzz words, acronyms, and techno-speak have no place in a presentation. Your audience will not be impressed by hearing things they don’t understand. They will feel stupid and tune you out. If you can say it with less words – do it! Eliminate distracting “filler words and phrases” such as ah, err, you know, like, so, and others. 3. Your Props As soon as your audience sees a prop, including a slide, they should GET IT! Your slides are not an Ink Blot, or Rorschach Test, where interpretation of a visual is up to the person viewing it, with many “seeing” different images. Use high quality, universally understood images. Eliminate clutter from your slide presentation. Transitions and builds should be clean and not distracting. Fonts should be simple and easy to read. Don’t use fancy templates with corporate logos and contact information. My favorite templates, with no distractions, are. All white. All black. Limit the number of images. Occasionally, use a ‘blank’ slide or press the “B” button on your remote control. The eyes of your audience will shift from the screen to you, where they should be. This same idea for taking the image away should apply to physical props. When their need is over, put them away or they become a distraction. 4. Your Personal Appearance You are the presenter, not the presentation. For Guys: Madras sport coat, colorful socks, and bright orange tennis shoes – Fuhgeddaboudit! Think: Steve Jobs or Mark Zuckerberg. For Gals: Bright bling, patterned scarves, and multi-colored eyeglass frames – Fuhgeddaboudit! Think: Rachel Maddow. Plain – Simple – NO Distractions! It’s best if your audience doesn’t notice what you are wearing. • Keep Your Audience’s Attention by . . .

Doing These Three Things! Transcript Fred Miller, NO SWEAT Public Speaking! One of the challenges a speaker has is keeping the attention of the audience. We have the attention span of a gnat! If you lose the audience, they’re never gonna get your message. Here Are Three Ways To Combat That. Number One: After your opening and before the body of your speech, issue a Disclaimer. Example: I’m going to show you my way to develop, practice and deliver great Elevator Speech. It works really, really well for lots of people. But honestly, there are others who do it differently. Some do it way differently and works it well for them. My suggestion is be a sponge. Absorb everything, then squeeze out what you don’t need and do it your own way. Number Two: Humor! People love humor! Example: Stand up. Tell us who you are and what you do. Many people feel like this lady, right? Now, personally, it’s always been a religious experience. “Please, don’t call me first. I know I should have been ready.” And Number Three: Keep it simple: Simple Language, Simple Concepts, and Simple Images. Because if someone’s confused about what you’re trying to present, they’ll never get it and they’ll tune you out. Do those three things and I guarantee your next presentation will be absolutely, positively – NO SWEAT! —————————————————————————————————————————————————————– About the Author Fred E. • BLOGGING: How to increase the reach of your posts!

One of the best pieces of advice ever given to me about blogging was this: “Content is King!” Blog regularly, about three hundred words or more, and watch your audience grow. Admittedly, it isn’t that simple. Keywords and a variety of SEO (Search Engine Optimization) factors come into play. However, the BIG thing is: Give your audience valuable information so they learn something and keep returning to your site. You’ll be seen as an EXPERT. This is important because: People like to work with EXPERTS. EXPERTS command more money for their products and services. Expand the reach of your blog posts by doing the following: Get a FREE iTunes podcast channel or secure one on another hosting site. Record your post and share it on your podcast channel. BIG side benefit: Doing this will make you a better speaker and a better writer! Do video blogs. Having your audience see and hear you builds your community. Your audience will feel they know you. Place that video into your YouTube or Vimeo channel. Download the audio from the video and place it into your podcast channel. Place the transcript below your video. Text – Audio – Video Now, there are three places Google and audiences will find you! Use Email Marketing to send your audience a “teaser” of your post so they “click” on it and go to your site to read, listen to, or watch your message. Your Posts will be Better if: When possible, follow this formula: Make a Point – Tell a Story! Facts and Statistics can be b-o-r-i-n-g. Your audience will learn from and remember your stories. When appropriate, make an emotional connection with your story, Make them personal stores because no one, unless you’ve given permission, can tell your story. Use simple language in your stories. If the verbiage isn’t easily understood you’ll lose the reader, Place high quality, universally interpreted images in your posts. They must reinforce the story you are telling. One of the greatest benefits is the knowledge you will gain by writing regularly because: “The Learning is in the Doing!” Blog regularly following the above advice and your presentations will be absolutely, positively – NO SWEAT! ————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————— About the Author Fred E. • Best EYE CONTACT TIPS: Dos and Don’ts!

Eye Contact, like all elements of non-verbal communication, is extremely important when delivering a presentation. When done correctly, there is a better connection with those watching and listening. When Eye Contact is not done well, there can be a disconnect between what you intend to convey and what your audience perceives as your message. The following Best Eye Contact Tips: Dos and Don’ts are IMPORTANT! Read them – Understand them – Use them! DO When speaking: DO look at individuals directly in the eye, finish a thought, then DO move on to someone else in a different section. Repeat. DO look at all places your audience is seated. When answering a question: DO start answering by looking directly at the person who asked the question, then follow the above directions. DON’T When speaking: DON’T stare at anyone. That would make them uncomfortable and no one likes that. DON’T be a like searchlight, moving your head from side to side and not making a connection with individuals. DON’T roll your eyes if someone asks a question you consider silly. DON’T look only at an attendee who asked a question. • I was WRONG!

A Large Audience is BETTER! Some consider the “Fear of Public Speaking” somewhat analogous to the “Fear of Heights.” Example:  I can stand on a stool, step stool, or folding ladder and have no fear. However, climbing an extension ladder that reaches the gutters on my two story home – I’ve done it, but don’t enjoy it. If I had to go higher, I wouldn’t even try. In a similar vein, many people can talk, with no fear, one-on-one or to several people at a time. As the size of that group grows, many find the “Fear of Public Speaking” creeps in. In theory, I agree with this. One of the problems with speaking to very small audiences is that you can become too comfortable. It’s possible to get a false sense of security and think, “I’ve got this! I can get in front of any group and deliver a great presentation.” That “sense of comfort” you thought you had, can come back and bite you when given an important “Speaking Opportunity!” to a larger group, that could potentially help your business or career. Standing in front of many people, and having all those eyeballs focused on you, could easily take you way out of your comfort zone. The goal you set for your talk may not have the impact you wanted, or worse. As our delivery and confidence improves, a larger crowd presents advantages. Audience members are much more reserved in their emotions in smaller groups. They are less likely to laugh out loud, cheer, or applaud vigorously if they are one of few in your audience. There is a dynamic to large groups that brings out the intimidation many feel when in smaller groups. Have you ever gone to a movie matinee when the theater only had a half dozen people? Not as much fun vs. a full theatre, is it? As a speaker, I like to connect with individuals in the audience through eye contact. Even though I can’t do this with everyone in a large group, those observing my facial expressions, gestures, and body movements will GET my intent. In an audience of only a few, the connection is different. Some people don’t want a lot of eye contact and feel uncomfortable. That can be awkward for both of us. When delivering my talks, I like to “take the temperature of the audience.” I love seeing heads nodding and approving my message, but because I always want to improve, folks shaking their heads in disagreement, or those with a confused expression on their face, let me know they are not GETTING IT! and I need to make some changes. Larger audiences give more feedback. More attendees usually means more diversity and people with different perspectives. I like that! Some are not going to agree with points I’m making, and that’s OK. With smaller groups, and less diversity, messages to and from audience members don’t have the same feeling for either of us. Also, with a larger audience, it’s easier to move on to people who agree, or question my points. I want both. For Q&A, more is better. The result is usually more questions from attendees and a more vigorous discussion of those questions, with everyone, including the speaker, learning something. Get out of your Comfort Zone and make it Larger! Do that, and I guarantee your presentations, in front of small and larger audiences, will be – NO SWEAT! ———————————————————————————————————————————————— About Fred E. Miller Fred E. • Elevator Speech Guidelines!

Transcript Fred Miller, NO SWEAT Public Speaking! Here are some Guidelines for a great Elevator Speech. Number one: NO Selling! Selling, if it is to occur, occurs later. An Elevator Speech is for sorting and sifting. And for to do that well, It must be clear, concise, and consistent. Clear: If someone hearing it doesn’t understand the words you’re speaking they’re going to turn you off and they’re certainly not going to hire you or refer you. It needs to be concise. Fifteen second increments. I’ve got a lot of Elevator Speeches and what I found is that Less is More. And finally, it has to be consistent. If you’re at four different networking events and hear me give my Elevator Speech four times, it better be the same. If it’s not, there’s a disconnect and you’re going to turn me off. The bottom line: That Elevator Speech must clearly articulate what you do in a very concise manner and have an impact. Do that and I guarantee your Elevator Speech will be absolutely, positively – NO SWEAT! ———————————————————————————————————————————————— About Fred E. Miller Fred E. Red Pencils and Bucket Lists with Fred Millerhttps://nosweatpublicspeaking.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/red-pencils-bucket-lists-with-fred-miller-2.mp3 Description This lively, informative interview features Fred Miller, a compelling speaker, writer, and international coach.  Fred is the author of five popular books in his No Sweat Public Speaking series.  In this episode, Deb interviews Fred about his journey from a single public speaking class to growing and developing his business; his dream of helping others to master public speaking; and the success secrets he’s learned along the way.  With wit and gentle humor, Fred highlights the importance of knowing your why, the power of the pivot, and the art of recovering from holy cow moments and epic fails. If you’re looking for a great listen, you’ve come to the right place.  Grab your favorite earphones and a cup of java, or head out for a walk or drive.  Then click the Play button above and enjoy the ride. The Backstory The first time I heard Fred Miller speak in person I was absolutely dazzled.  He was a guest speaker at a monthly meeting of the Saint Louis Publisher’s Association, which I had joined while working on a book in 2020.  In a word, he was astounding.  Not only was the content he presented pitch perfect for the audience — his presentation skills were out of this world.  He was dynamic, funny, and charming, and his use of PowerPoint was a thing of beauty.  After his presentation, I wanted to thank him in person, as did the long line of admirers who waited to speak with him that evening.  So, I walked away without talking with him that night, but with his powerful presentation playing in my head. Flash forward to 2021, when I was proofreading for a local business magazine.  Fred wrote a regular column for the monthly publication, and I was assigned to his work as a proofreader.  Fred tells one of my favorite stories about how he came to hire me as an editor for one of his book revisions.  Needless to say our collaboration was delightful, and he quickly moved to the top of my guestlist for the podcast. Happily, he said, “Yes.”  Now it’s your turn to fall head over heels for the marvelous Fred Miller. The Interview You’ll especially enjoy the part of the interview where we talk about Fred’s superpower and kryptonite, and success secrets he has learned from following his dreams.  Along the way, you’ll hear engaging stories from a master storyteller and learn a few tips and techniques for overcoming your own fear of public speaking. • Use PATTERN INTERRUPTS to . . .

    •  Keep Your Audience’s Attention. •  Make Them Receptive to Your Message. Your audience has the attention span of a gnat! Not only that, they are easily distracted by others in the audience, their phones, and a variety of things the speaker cannot control. A Pattern Interrupt is: something not expected and out of the ordinary that abruptly grabs people’s attention. Pattern interrupts allow you to engage more effectively and create meaningful interactions. Let’s look at some of the components, parts, and elements of a presentation and how they can be used. Introduction A short video clip about the speaker and topic can be viewed by the audience before the master of ceremonies introduces the speaker. Opening Music, sound effects, and lighting displays can be incorporated into the speaker’s Opening. Sirens wailing, instruments playing, and thunder rolling are examples. Of course they must be relevant to the topic. Presentation Disclaimer Telling your audience, before the body of your talk: “My way is not the only way to do this. Others do it well, also. My suggestion is to absorb everything; squeeze out what you don’t need, and do it your own way. This Pattern Interrupt is a huge way to build credibility. Presenter Singing, dancing, doing magic tricks, juggling, and acrobatics are options. So are wearing costumes and using a variety of props. For example; I’m a father, a son, a speaker, etc. For each of those roles I put on a different hat. Slides Use high quality, universally understood images, and very little text. (No one attends to read your presentation.) Those slides can include animated GIFS, beautiful images, and short video clips. Virtual Presentations. Green screens and special software give many opportunities to change your background and appearance, along with a multitude of special effects. Mastering these will grab people’s attention and make for your talk memorable. Closing “The last thing you say and do is the first thing the audience will remember.” Use Patten Interrupts in your presentations and I guarantee they’ll be absolutely, positively – NO SWEAT! ———————————————————————————————————————————————— About the Author Fred E. • Use a DISCLAIMER to increase Audience Attention.

Transcript Fred Miller, “NO SWEAT Public Speaking!” Here’s a great way to hold your audience’s attention throughout your presentation. Start with a DISCLAIMER. Here’s one of mine: “We’re going to talk about Elevator Speeches and I’m going to show you my way. It works  really, really well for me and lots of people I’ve  trained. But quite honestly, there are others who do it differently. Some do it way differently, and it works really well for them. My suggestion is to be a sponge. Absorb everything. Squeeze out what you don’t need, and then do it your own way. Here’s what you’re going to find. People are going  to appreciate that honesty of you not saying, “My way or the highway,” Because sometimes, if you say something from the get-go and they don’t  believe it, they’ll tune you out for the whole  presentation. That really gives you credibility!
