"From Boring to Brilliant. The Role of Stories in Memorable Speaking."

The Role of Stories in Memorable Speaking."

If you want your audience to remember what you say, don’t just tell them—show them. Tell a story.

Tell Stories that Matter

Stories stick. They create pictures in our minds, stir up emotion, and make your message feel personal, not just informational. I tell my clients this all the time: Facts tell, stories sell. When we hear stories, we go into the hard drive of our brain and pick out a file that coincides with the story we’re hearing. It conjures up memories, emotions, and lessons learned. Those are reasons that telling stories are super powerful.

I’m not talking about rambling anecdotes that have no point. I’m talking about short, relevant stories that make your message come alive. Important: Tell personal stories. No one, unless you’ve given permission, can tell your story.

Here are some story telling techniques that work:

1. Start in the action.  Don’t warm up with a lot of background. Drop us right into the moment: “I was standing backstage, heart racing, wondering if I’d remember my opening line.” You’ve got our attention.

2. Use vivid detail—but not too much.  You’re painting with words. A few sensory details go a long way. Let us see the room, hear the conversation, feel the tension.

3. Make it personal.  Share something real and emotional. Vulnerability builds trust. Audiences connect with people, not perfection.

4. Tie it to your message.  Always. Your story should support the point you're making. It’s not just entertainment—it’s illustration.

5. Tell it like you’d tell a friend.  Keep your tone conversational. Avoid jargon. Be real.

Bonus tip: Don’t tell the moral—let the audience discover it.  Trust them to make the connection. When people figure something out on their own, they remember it longer.

Public speaking is about connection. And stories are how we connect.

So next time you speak, don’t just share data—share a story. That’s what people will take home.
