My Best Advice for Becoming a Better Speaker is. . .

SPEAK!

Here’s some Bad News for those who want to lessen their Fear of Public Speaking and become a Better Speaker:

There is NO Magic Pill to fix that!

I wish there was!

Perhaps one of the large drug companies has it in Clinical Trials. If so, I haven’t read about it, and don’t advise waiting until it’s developed!

You Can:

  1. Think about speaking.

  2. Read about speaking.

  3. Watch Videos of others speaking.

  4. View speakers practicing their craft.

  5. Listen to speakers delivering their talks.

  6. Attend classes and lectures about presentations.

Like all the skills you now own,

“The Learning is in the Doing!”

  1. If you want to be a writer – Write!

  2. If you want to be a piano player – Play the Piano!

  3. If you want to be a Speaker – Speak! – Speak! – Speak!

What’s the worst thing that could happen?

  1. The Writer’s stories stink.

  2. The Piano Player’s music is lousy.

  3. The Speaker Bombs!

Big deal! Who cares? It’s a drop in the ocean of your life. It’s nothing!

Don’t forget to Practice before you Speak!

  1. Practice in front of a mirror.

  2. Practice in front of friends and family.

  3. Practice out loud.

  4. Practice the “sticky spots.”

  5. We tend to avoid and not practice parts of our presentation that we don’t do well.

  6. Tackle those first!

  7. Memorize your Opening and Closing.

  8. Remember “The Law of Primacy and Recency.”

  9. The audience best remembers the first and last things they see and hear.

  10. That’s why you need a Strong Opening and a Strong Closing!

  11. Practice one hour for each minute of presentation.

Practice – Present – Repeat!

Practice isn’t the thing you do once you’re good.  It’s the thing you do that makes you good.  –  Malcolm Gladwell – “Outliers”
