Building Your Personal Brand at Networking Events

Building Your Personal Brand at Networking Events

Networking events aren’t just about collecting business cards or adding LinkedIn connections—they’re prime opportunities to build your personal brand.

Here’s the bottom line: You already have a personal brand. It’s what people think of when they hear your name. The real questions are: What are they thinking and, are you shaping it intentionally?

At networking events, you’re not just representing your company or job title—you’re representing you. Your personality, values, expertise, and how you make people feel all contribute to your brand.

Here's how to do it effectively.

First: Show up prepared.

Know who’s attending and what kind of conversations you want to have. (Some events will provide this in advance.) Have a clear, concise Elevator Speech that communicates who you are, what you do, and why it matters. Don’t wing it—this is your first impression, and you want it to stick. Get my proven Elevator Speech Template HERE.

Second: Be consistent. Your brand should show up in how you dress, how you speak, and how you follow up. If you say you’ll reach out—do it. If you offer help—follow through. That’s how reputations are built.

Third: Listen more than you talk. Strong brands aren’t loud—they’re relevant. Ask good questions. Be curious. Make the other person feel like the most important person in the room. That’s memorable.

Finally: Share stories. Stories are powerful brand builders. They showcase your expertise, highlight your values, and make your message stick.

Every handshake, every conversation, every follow-up text, email, letter, or phone call—it all adds to your personal brand.

Be intentional. Be authentic. Be memorable.

Remember: Networking isn’t a transaction—it’s the start of a relationship. The stronger your personal brand, the more likely people are to want to continue that relationship. Follow this advice for networking and I guarantee you'll build an outstanding personal brand with - NO SWEAT!
