Fear of Public Speaking: The BIG WHAT

Updated: Dec 19, 2023

WHY the Fear of Public Speaking?

Numerous things contribute to The Fear of Public Speaking. For many, it is the BIG WHAT?

WHAT am I going to talk about? WHAT can I tell an audience they’ve never heard before? WHAT topic can I speak about, confidently, that people will find helpful, interesting, and important?

Answer:

You have something to present.

The Problem:

Many times, we’re too close to ourselves. Bill Prenatt, a wise friend, once said: “Your knowledge base is so wide and so deep, you often don’t know what you know.”

Your everyday could be somebody’s payday. Your everyday could be someone’s ‘Aha!’ moment.

Each and every person has knowledge and experience people would love to hear and could benefit from.

Here’s a way to find that topic.

  1. Take out your phone.

  2. Open the Photo App.

  3. Start scrolling.

  4. Stop when you find a picture with an image that “Tells a story.” (The Formula for the Body of a Speech is: Make a Point. Tell a Story that reinforces the point you just made. Preferably this should be a personal story. No one, unless you’ve given permission, can tell your story.)

  5. A story of persistence.

  6. A story of overcoming obstacles.

  7. A story of reaching a goal.

  8. A story helping others.

  9. A story about an experience in which you acquired new knowledge.

  10. Ask yourself:

  11. What did you learn?

  12. What would you do differently?

  13. How can this experience and information help others?

Include personal stories in your presentations and I guarantee they will be will be absolutely, positively – NO SWEAT!
