How to Rehearse Effectively Without Sounding Rehearsed

How to Rehearse Effectively Without Sounding Rehearsed

Some speakers worry:

“If I practice too much, I’ll sound rehearsed.”

Actually…

Most speakers sound stiff because they rehearsed the wrong way—or didn’t practice enough.

The goal isn’t to memorize every word.

The goal is to know your presentation well enough to sound:

  • Confident.

  • Conversational.

  • Authentic.

Know your key points.

Don’t memorize your entire talk.

Know:

  • Your opening.

  • Your closing.

  • Your transitions.

  • Your key ideas.

  • Your stories.

Then deliver them as though you’re having a conversation.

Practice out loud.

Silent practice doesn’t count.

Stand up.

Speak out loud.

Use your non-verbal communication skills.

  • Gestures.

  • Facial expressions.

  • Pauses.

  • Purposeful movement.

Practice the way you plan to deliver.

Use slides correctly.

Slides should support you—not replace you.

Use:

  • Photographs.

  • Illustrations

  • Graphs.

  • Simple images.

No one comes to read your presentation. Don’t fill slides with bullet points.

Images become visual cues that help you remember where you are without tempting you to read to the audience.

Video yourself.

THIS is my best tip for practicing.

Your phone /computer gives you everything you need.

Record your presentation, full body, and review it several ways:

  • Watch it without sound.

    • What does your body language say?

  • Listen without watching.

    • How do your voice, pace, pauses, and filler words sound?

  • Watch and listen together.

    • Are your words and body language in sync?

"People believe what they see."

Video shows you what the audience will see—and hear.

Fix the sticky spots.

Notice where you:

  • Stumble.

  • Hesitate.

  • Ramble.

  • Lose energy.

Fix those areas or remove them.

Don’t practice until you get it right. Practice until you can’t get it wrong.

When you prepare this way, you won’t sound rehearsed.

You’ll sound ready.
