If You Don’t Like the Phrase, “HIRE ME,” . . .

DON’T Use It!

I love the phrase “HIRE ME,” and use it in my Elevator Speech like this: “Businesses, Individuals, and Organizations HIRE ME because they want to improve their networking, public speaking, and presentation skills.”

“HIRE ME,” says: “I’m good at what I do. I’m proud of it. And, if you want to do business with me, it’s not free.”

The usual Elevator Speech words like: “I work with people,” or “I help companies,” don’t have the impact “HIRE ME” has. They are wishy-washy and don’t have ‘money’ connected to them. (If you’re independently wealthy, and don’t need or want to be compensated, that’s fine!)

Here are Guides for Elevator Speeches:   • Group (Elevator Speech Template and Worksheet)   • One-On-One Elevator Speech (EXPRESS Elevator Speech Template)

“HIRE ME” may Dis-Qualify some hearing it – Good! Everyone is not a prospect for your products and services. You are not going to buy everything offered to you. Don’t waste major time on minor possibilities.

However, some may not be comfortable using that phrase. During a Q&A session at one of my Elevator Speech Workshops, I was admonished by an attendee with this statement: “Seems to me you have an Attitude with that “HIRE ME” verbiage, Fred”

I agreed! I then told her I think it’s a good attitude. I asked her if she rather deal with someone who didn’t seem confident and proud of their products and services. Having said that, if you’re not comfortable using “HIRE ME,” – Don’t! Those hearing you will know you’re uncomfortable and that will come across as not being confident in your offerings. That doesn’t prompt people to want a future conversation, does it!

Here are some alternatives to “HIRE ME.” “Become clients.” “Put me on their payroll.” “Write me checks.” “Engage my services.” “Pay us to . . .”

Other Examples: A physician might say, “People become my patients.”

A realtor I know says, “People wanting to purchase or sell a home choose me.”

I love that phrase – Choose me! It implies there are many who do what I do, and from that huge pool, they choose me! The pilot of a Southwest Airline, after landing, tells the passengers, “We know you have a lot of choices when you fly. Thanks for choosing Southwest!” Nice!

Bottom Line: If “HIRE ME” doesn’t fit you, OK. Substitute something with the same meaning that will help folks GET IT! when delivering your Elevator Speech. Do that and your Elevator Speech will be – NO SWEAT!
