Five Tips for Delivering Powerful Openings and Closings (Why They Matter More Than You Think)

There’s a reason I tell all my public speaking clients and students: “Have a strong opening—and a stronger closing. The last thing you say and do is the first thing the audience will remember.”
That’s not just a clever line. It’s backed by The Law of Primacy and Recency: People best remember the opening and closing of a presentation more than anything in the middle.
(Develop, Practice, and Deliver your outstanding presentation with this proven "Speaker's Template.")
Want your presentation to stick? Focus on how you begin and how you end. Here are five tips to help you do both effectively:
1. Open with a hook. Start with something that grabs attention of the audience—a quick story, a bold statement, a surprising stat. Don’t waste time warming up. Make your audience sit up and take notice.
2. Be clear about the value. Let the audience know what’s in it for them. When people know they’ll benefit from listening, they’ll lean in instead of tuning out.
3. Preview your roadmap. Give a quick overview of where you’re headed. It helps your audience follow along and reinforces that you’re focused and prepared.
4. Summarize and reinforce. Before you close, give a quick review of the highlights of your talk. Remind your audience of your main message. Drive it home—this is what you want to stick.
5. End with impact—and pause. Close with a call to action, a powerful quote, or a story callback. Then pause. Let your final words settle in. That pause makes it memorable.
Remember: A strong start earns attention. A strong finish earns results.
Make your first words count—and your last words unforgettable.
