To Your Presentation.
Early in your presentation, telling your audience you are NOT the only, ultimate, know-it-all authority on your topic, immediately gets them to pay attention to your message with an open mind. It’s unusual for them to hear a statement like that and it gives you, the speaker, increased credibility.
Having your audience in a receptive mode for your message is a Good Thing because the goal of all communication is the audience GETS IT! They may not agree with everything. They may not agree with anything. But, if they don’t GET IT!, there cannot be a conversation going forward.
You’ve had the experience, I’m sure, of starting to read an article, listen to a podcast, or watch a video and quickly made the decision: “It’s not going to be valuable to me because I disagree with what I just read, heard, or saw.” You stop reading, listening, or watching and move on to something else. What did you miss learning? You’ll never know, unless you return to the piece.
Imagine the story started with a “disclaimer” like: “This is my take on this topic. I believe it. However, many have other perspectives that are also valuable. Please investigate mine and different viewpoints. Then, take a ‘best practices’ attitude!’ to form your opinion.” That verbiage increases their credibility, doesn’t it? Might you have completed the article? I’m guessing the answer is, “Yes!” I also believe you would have gained new, and possibly, valuable information.
You gain the respect and credibility of your audience when you tell them every single thing you’ll say and do is not gospel.
It works for you, and many others. However, everything may not fit everyone in the audience, and that’s OK! It’s not the usual statement they’re used to hearing, and they’ll welcome it with an open attitude!
Incorporate the “My Way is Not the Only Way” verbiage early in your presentations and I predict they will be absolutely, positively – NO SWEAT!
