Pronunciation vs. Enunciation. They’re Not the Same Thing!

They may sound similar, but pronunciation and enunciation are two different things—and both matter if you want to be an effective speaker. They matter because the goal of all communication, including speaking, is that the audience - GETS IT! Unless pronunciation and enunciation are done correctly, that goal may not be attained.
Pronunciation
is about saying the word correctly. It’s the difference between “specific” and “pacific,” or “ask” and “axe.” Mispronouncing words can distract your audience, lower your credibility, and pull attention away from your message. If you’re unsure how a word should sound, look it up! Online dictionaries will even pronounce it for you. There’s no excuse for getting it wrong—especially if it’s a key word in your presentation.
Enunciation, on the other hand, is about clarity. It’s speaking so every syllable is heard and understood. You can pronounce every word correctly but still sound sloppy if you mumble or talk too fast. Clear enunciation means opening your mouth, projecting your voice, and separating your words. Think of it as “crisp diction.”
Why does all this matter?
Because words are the vehicle for your message. If people can’t understand you, they can’t follow you. Whether you’re giving a speech, leading a meeting, or introducing yourself at a networking event, clear pronunciation and enunciation tell the audience you’re confident, credible, and professional.
Try this: Record yourself.
Listen. Are your words clear and correct? If not, practice until they are. Remember—great speakers aren’t born; they’re built through awareness and repetition.
The takeaway: Speak so people can understand you—and want to listen to you. That’s part of delivering your talk clearly, confidently, and credibly.
Follow this advice when practicing your presentations and they will be absolutely, positively - NO SWEAT!
