You Want to Give a Great Presentation!
Think about this: • Football teams hold scrimmages. • Baseball players go to summer camp. • Musicians, dancers, and singers continually rehearse. • Attorneys work on their closing statements. • Surgeons train before operating. Why would anyone think they could deliver a great presentation by Winging It?
Practice – Practice – Practice!
• Steve Jobs, one of the best speakers ever, would practice for weeks before presenting a new apple product or service. • A rule of thumb for TED Talk speakers is one hour of preparation for each minute of presentation.
Here are Five Proven Ways to Practice.
Make an Audio Recording of your talk.
This is also an important activity to do when working on your Content.
Recording and listening will help fill in presentation gaps and make corrections in the language and text of your presentation.
It is not just what you say, but how you say it.
Listen, critically, for pacing, inflection, pauses, and filler words; uh, so, like, you know, etc. Record and critique your presentation repeatedly for improvement.
Do you mumble? Are you pronouncing each word clearly so they are easily understood?
Is the projection of your voice good and consistent or does it fade?
It will help to have your “coach” listen, also!
You are too close to yourself to do this well and our minds often filter out things others will see and hear. Remember: “Professionals have coaches, amateurs don’t.”
Deliver your talk in front of a Full Length Mirror.
Take note of your facial expressions, gestures, and other non-verbal communication.
The audience believes what they see. If there is a conflict between what you say and what they see, non-verbal wins.
Remember one of the Obama / Romney presidential debates where the president almost blew it because he seemed aloof and disengaged?
Make a video of your presentation using your computer or tablet.
The First Time you use that video, turn off the sound. Just watch. Nonverbal communication trumps verbal.
We believe what we see.
The Second Time you use it, don’t look at the video – just listen. You will hear things that you would’ve heard if you were watching.
Maybe some ahs, errs (smack, smack, smack). Things like that; Filler words, distractions.
Third Time – watch and listen!
You will see and hear what the audience sees and hears.
There’s a Fourth Thing to do. Get someone, perhaps your presentation coach, to watch and listen with you.
We all have blind spots. We can’t see and hear everything the audience will see and hear. Get their advice.
Then, repeat. Take that great advice – do the video, again. Practice – Practice – Practice. Video it. Repeat, repeat, repeat.
Practice in front of Friends and Family.
Rather than ask, “How did I do?” Ask each person to name one or two things about your presentation they liked, and to suggest one or two areas that need improvement.
Do this in front of several groups. Toastmasters is a great organization to join and practice your talk.
If possible, practice at the scheduled venue. This can make a huge difference. At the very least, on the day of your talk arrive at the location early to familiarize yourself with the ‘lay of the land.’
Surprises can stress you out!
Practice in your ‘Mind’s Eye.’
Napoleon Hill, one of the earliest producers of the modern genre of personal success literature, said, “Whatever the mind of man can conceive, he can achieve.”
Picture yourself calm and collected as you deliver your presentation.
Picture the audience loving your presentation; leaning forward, giving you eye contact, and delivering other positive nonverbal communication signals.

Other Practicing Tips.
Memorize your Opening and Closing.
The Presentation Law of Primacy and Recency says your audience will best remember the first and last things you say and do. Q&A, if done, should be placed before your Closing.
This is why you want a strong opening and a strong closing. Memorizing, and repeatedly practicing them, will ensure this.
A strong closing is important because the last thing you say and do will be the first thing they will remember!
Practice Sticky Spots.
We have a tendency to practice parts of our presentation we do well, and avoid problem areas. Those sticky spots will not get better left alone!
It may be the words, inflection, or pacing that needs adjustment. Practice those areas until they are as good as the rest of your talk.You may need to change a few things here.
Not doing this can cause angst and affect other areas of your talk.
Be Conversational.
An excellent speech should be delivered as if you were talking one-on-one to those in attendance.
Don’t use words and phrases they don’t understand or you’ll lose your audience.
Clean and simple language rules!
If your presentation includes Slides, and there are good reasons to employ them, use high quality, universally understood images.
“Bullet Points Kill! Kill the Bullet Points!”
We cannot multitask! If you are reading a bullet point, your audience is likely reading a different one, and there is a disconnect.
Bullet Points do not reinforce a message.
They complicate the message.
They confuse the audience.
They conflict with the presenter.
Your audience has the following three learning styles. Appealing to two or more of them increases the probability they’ll GET IT!
Visual.
Auditory.
Kinesthetic (Learn by doing.)
Practice – Practice – Practice with your slides.
Presentation mode, in PPT and Keynote, makes this easier by letting you view what your audience sees and the upcoming slide.
Amount of Practice.
A good rule of thumb for how much time to devote is:
One hour practicing for each minute of presentation.
Little Things can make a Big difference.
If you’re using slides in your presentation, practice with a remote control that can make the screen go blank.
The attention of the audience will go from the screen to you, where it should be since non-verbal communication trumps verbal.
Inflecting specific words in a sentence can dramatically change, and make memorable, points in your talk. This takes trial and error and practice
Example: “If you get something right the first time you do it, you probably don’t give it a second thought.”
P-a-u-s-i-n-g gives folks an opportunity to think about what you said, digest it a bit, and anticipate your next statements. This takes practice!
