Storytelling in Public Speaking: Techniques to Make Your Message Memorable

If you want your audience to remember what you say, and you do! - don’t just give them information—give them a story.
Stories stick. They’re how humans have communicated meaning for thousands of years. Data may inform, but stories connect. They make your message relatable, emotional, and unforgettable.
Here are some storytelling techniques that work:
1. Start with action. Don’t ease into it with background and buildup. Jump right into the moment. Instead of saying, “A few years ago, I had an experience,” say, “It was 8:30 in the morning, and I was staring at a room full of executives waiting for me to speak.” Now you’ve got your audience’s attention.
2. Make it visual. Use details that let your audience see what’s happening. Describe sights, sounds, or emotions. Just don’t overdo it—too much detail slows the story down.
3. Keep it personal and real. Authenticity is powerful. Tell personal stories that reveal something about you. No one but you, unless you've given permission, can tell your story. Vulnerability makes you relatable—and relatability builds trust.
4. Tie it to your message. Every story should support the point you’re making. Ask yourself: “Why am I telling this?” If it doesn’t advance your main idea, it’s just filler.
5. Deliver it naturally. Tell your story the way you’d tell it to a friend over coffee. Conversational tone. Real emotion. No script. The best stories sound spontaneous, even if you’ve rehearsed them.
Remember: the goal of public speaking isn’t to transfer information—it’s to transfer emotion. And the best way to do that is through story.
So don’t just speak. Tell a story. That’s what your audience will remember.Follow this advice for your presentations and they will be absolutely, positively - NO SWEAT! ——————————————————————————————————————————————————
