When Presenting: Speak in Cadence

When Presenting_ Speak in Cadence

“Speaking in cadence” is one of those things people feel more than they understand—and that’s exactly the point!

When your speech has cadence:

  • It has rhythm.

  • It moves.

  • It breathes.

  • It sounds like a human being talking, not a script being read.

Most people flatten their delivery because they’re focused on getting the words right. Great speakers focus on getting the music right.

Cadence comes from variation.

  • Short sentences.

  • Longer ones that stretch a bit.

  • A pause—right where it matters.

That pause? That’s not dead air. That’s emphasis.

If everything you say sounds the same, your audience checks out. Their brains need contrast to stay engaged. Think of it like a song with only one note—it doesn’t matter how important the lyrics are, nobody’s listening for long.

Here’s the practical part.

  1. Stop trying to sound “professional.” Start sounding natural. Record yourself explaining something to a friend—that’s your baseline.

  2. Mark your pauses. Literally. When you practice, build in beats where you want your audience to think, react, or lean in.

  3. Read great speeches out loud. Not in your head—out loud. Feel how the words rise and fall. There’s a reason powerful talks sound different.

  4. Finally, embrace imperfection. Cadence isn’t about being polished. It’s about being alive in the moment.

Here’s the truth: People don’t connect to perfect delivery. They connect to energy, rhythm, and intention.

Get the cadence right, and suddenly your message lands harder—without you adding a single extra word. Follow these suggestions for using cadence in your presentations and they will be absolutely, positively - NO SWEAT! ——————————————————————————————————————————————————
